FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER:
We headed south for Susan and Mike’s Los Cabos Mexico wedding, which was an amazing reprieve from the cold Canadian weather! What a way to kick off the New Year in style! I love traveling, and it’s such a great bonus of my job to be able to see the world and do what I love, with my husband at my side!
I met Susan and Mike in 2017 when we shot their engagement session, and I immediately connected with this twosome. We immediately began planning their Mexican wedding getaway, and I was thrilled to be a part of the excitement!
We began the day with Susan getting ready with her girls at the Riu Palace; a dreamy resort perfect for occasions like this. Susan’s bridesmaids wore beautiful matching floral robes, with Susan in a white silk robe, created by her talented friend Nicole (owner of Evelynn by Nicole Snobelen). She slipped into her gorgeous form-fitting, Allure Bridal dress, accented with lots of delicate lace, with the help of her maids and her mother, while in another suite Mike got suited up with his groomsmen. The guys had a blast laughing and chatting while getting ready, and Mike even got a haircut on the spot from a talented guest, Kyle, the owner of London Fades Barbershop! I had never seen this in all my years of shooting weddings!
The romantic wedding backdrop was everything anyone could ask for; blazing, bright sunshine, crystal clear, blue water, and gorgeous mountains in the background as Susan and Mike pledged their love to each other forever.
After the vows were exchanged and everyone toasted a glass of champagne, we used the beach to our advantage to take some beautiful wedding party photos. Then, I nabbed some intimate portraits of the new Mr. and Mrs. in the gorgeous resort gardens as guests cheered and clapped wherever we went!
The atmosphere was lively and we headed to the marina with the whole wedding party for authentic and fun-filled photos. It was a blast! We stopped on the way back to the resort to shoot tequila and drink Coronas at a small restaurant, which then turned into an impromptu dance party right in the street! It was nuts! Random people off the street joined in, and everyone was celebrating Susan and Mike in the most epic and crazy way! So much fun!
As the sun set, I captured some sweet photos of Susan and Mike that are simply enchanting, then we headed to the reception for dinner, dancing, and drinks along with heartfelt speeches. The newlyweds and guests danced the night away at an incredible party that was truly off the charts!
FROM THE COUPLE:
THE MEETING & PROPOSAL
“Well technically we met on Tinder. So let’s skip to the proposal! Mike flew me out on a surprise trip for the Thanksgiving weekend/my birthday to Banff, Alberta – a place he knew held a piece of my heart, as I had worked there a few summers ago. He had never been, but he knew how much I loved it and how perfect it would be of a place to get engaged (and let me tell you it was). We spent the weekend in absolute beauty, touring the area and on the third day, on top of Sulphur Mountain in Banff National Park, with the snow falling so perfectly all around us, I turned around to tell Mike how perfect this moment was only to see that he was down on one knee with something extra sparkly in his hands. He looked so nervous- yet so focused, excited and devoted. It was the moment I’d been waiting for my entire life. And it was perfect. We then spent the rest of the weekend in bliss exploring the area including Lake Louise and Lake Moraine” says Susan.
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BIG DAY
“We just wanted our day to be true to who we are. We wanted things to be relatively simple and straight forward, with a few extra pops of colour and design here and there to let them stand out. I think mostly the only thing we really cared about was marrying each other… but other than that, one thing I was really passionate about was letting people be comfortable, including the groomsmen. I also wanted to have nice flowers. I wanted everything to be really whimsical, soft, airy and beautiful, which is why I picked the ombre shades of pink for the bridesmaid dresses, and brought out these colours in the florals as well. Another special part of our day was getting our brother-in-law, Marcel, to be the unofficial “officiant” at our wedding, translating the speech the real Spanish officiant said. It was so special for us, and very authentic to who we are.”
THE WEDDING DECOR
“We weren’t able to bring down a ton of decor since it was in Mexico, so we stuck with simple! We brought down framed photos of us from throughout the years and had handmade greeting and seating charts (made by my sister). My favourite part was actually the personalized, genuine, handmade maracas we had made by Maracas Mexico, a small family business out of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. They were handmade by the local Mexican people, and were all unique with their own designs, but had “Mike & Susan, Los Cabos, Mexico, 01.04.2018″ hand painted on the back. It felt great to support a small Mexican business, and get something so authentic for our guests to bring back! Many of them were super excited to bring them back for their kids” says Susan.
“My bridal bouquet was made of light pink senorita roses, white dendrobium orchids, white lisianthus and lots of greenery including eucalyptus, baby eucalyptus, silver dollars in dark dusty green. It was asymmetrical with a boho chic look. The flower arrangements decorating the wedding arch were light pink senorita roses, white lilies, white calla lilies and greenery with a boho chic look. I chose lilies in the arrangement as Susan in Hebrew means Lily. So lilies have always been special to me.”
“One way we personalized the day was our custom made wedding bands. Mike’s wedding band was actually made of his dad’s melted down yellow gold wedding band, re-shaped into a ring for Mike and with a special touch on the inside – the fingerprint of my ring finger engraved on the inside! It is so special and unique and one of a kind! I wish we had photos of it to share. My band was also custom made by Poags. We also loved having our brother-in-law as the unofficial officiant” mentions Susan.
“We knew the guys would want to be comfortable. More than anything, we want them to feel stylish, comfortable and not over-dressed/hot/sticky, so we chose to put them in stylish navy blue shorts, with a tan leather belt and lightweight, but pressed, white dress shirts. We wanted Mike to stand out a little more, so we got him a custom fitted dress shirt from Channer’s with navy blue buttons down the front – something extra to make him pop! They also all wore, alongside the fathers, tan Sperry’s. A classic yet stylish choice for young men. For myself, I knew I wanted a whimsical, beautiful, dreamy yet fitted dress that would accentuate my curves. I naturally fell in love with this Allure Bridal gown as it had curves in all the right places, and I loved the blush underlay of it! It was so beautiful and different, I loved that it had a touch of pink in it. I had never seen a bride wear a dress like this to any of the wedding I’d been to, so I knew I wanted to be the first. I also felt very beautiful and elegant in the lace.”
THE MOST ANTICIPATED MOMENT
“Seeing Mike at the end of the aisle as I walked down it. I just couldn’t wait to see his face and know it was real and I was going to marry the most handsome and amazing man ever” says Susan.
ANY WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE FOR NEWLY-ENGAGED COUPLES?
“Ask for help! People all around you want to help support you, all you need to do is reach out and ask them for support and help. They’re happy to step in and be of assistance.”
