We are injecting huge amounts of gorgeous beach inspiration on the blog today with this adorable wedding from Sint Maarten. A bit off the beaten path, and the first of its kind here on Adriana Weddings, we are SO thrilled to be featuring this darling bride Stephanie and her handsome groom.
Captured by Alexandre Julien and Carlos Lippai, this destination wedding had its ups and downs, but turned out to be a truly memorable one for the bride and groom.
So continue scrolling lovebirds, as Stephanie walks us through her special day, and all the wedding professionals who helped to make it all happen!
HOW & WHERE DID YOU TWO MEET?
We actually met at work in 2011. We were coworkers in the same department and sat very close to each other. It wasn’t until 2014 that we went on our first date 🙂
We were on vacation in Orlando and about to head out to explore on the last day of our trip, which happened to be May the 4th (Star Wars Day), when he said that he wanted to take a walk by the lake. Niran explained that one of the guys on the compound mentioned earlier that morning that he saw an alligator by the lake, and although he despises lizards in any shape, size or form, he wanted to see it too. I spent the majority of the 5 minute walk to the lake quarreling about his unhealthy obsession with hating lizard-like creatures, and being confused as to why he was cutting into my Star Wars Day celebrations to watch (and maybe get bitten) by an alligator on the lake’s shore. When we got to the lake and started walking around looking for this fake-gator, he pulled out the ring box, opened it, and proposed 🙂
I chose lavender with teal, gold and blush accents. We have both always loved purple as our favourite colour, and knowing that the wedding would be outdoors on the beach, I really wanted a light, dainty colour scheme, so the pastel colours really worked well.
There are so many! I was having makeup done when I saw my bouquet for the first time, and it was so so pretty. That’s when it finally hit me that it was our wedding day 🙂
- Seeing all of my bridesmaids / best friends in their full attire for the first time together.
- Getting a golf cart ride with my girls between the hotel room and the ceremony location.
- Seeing my handsome groom for the first time.
- Escorting the flower girl (2 year old) partially down the aisle because she stopped to play in the sand.
- Walking along the beach with my groom.
- That pumpkin soup!!
- EVERYONE’S toasts. They were so perfect, I couldn’t have asked for anything more meaningful. Especially the groom’s.
- Dancing in the sand on the beach till midnight.
That’s easy! I went into the dress shopping knowing exactly what I was looking for after weeks of research on different material types and silhouettes. Something light and breathable, yet princess-feeling; i.e, a ballgown with full tulle skirt. Once I found one that fit comfortably and was breathable, I latched onto it! It didn’t matter whether it was a beach wedding or not. You only get one chance to wear your dream dress 🙂
FAVOURITE WEDDING SHOT
The groom and I had just arrived at the spot where we planned to take some couples photographs after the wedding. I am a very awkward poser as i much prefer to be behind a camera, but the photographer was such an amazing person to work with; he said something funny to get me to loosen up, then took the first shot. I love this picture as it clearly shows the happiness that we both felt with finally being married, and the comfort that we feel when we’re together.
Yes! My maid of honour played and sung Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” on the ukulele for us during her toast and it was so so sweet and unexpected (yes I cried, lol). We also had a planned surprise for the Best Man’s girlfriend, as we used the bouquet toss as a sneaky opportunity for him to propose!
We chose Divi Little Bay Beach Resort in Sint Maarten. The groom’s parents own a timeshare there, so we had visited a couple of times before and fell in love with the island, its gorgeous blue waters and its resilient people. After Hurricane Irma, our plans did not waver, just the date as we waited for word on how re-construction was coming along and the date by which the hotel would re-open so that we could start to organize the event.
We did hire a wedding planner, and if we had to do it over again, we would not have hired a planner based on the island. Be wary of ‘planners’ at destinations which are not known for having destination weddings, because what you could take for granted to be as a given at home or in a more mainstream destination wedding location may not even cross the mind of a planner in a destination wedding location that is off the beaten track. However, you should have someone in the country to do all of the coordinating as the majority of your vendors would be based on the island. I would really like to commend the resort staff for being very accommodating and filling in the majority of the planning gaps that I couldn’t do myself.
Apart from staying an additional week in Sint Maarten after the wedding, we did a road trip in Florida as the groom loves driving for road trips and I love sightseeing! We visited the Everglades, Fort Myers, Tampa, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, but the highlight of the trip was definitely seeing Taylor Swift on her Reputation Stadium Tour in Tampa!
Any wedding planning advice that you'd like to share with other couples planning their day?
The wedding is just one day, your marriage is for a lifetime. Keep your priorities in check and don’t sweat the small stuff. It may seem like a big deal at the time, especially considering the financing going behind the event, but trust me when I say that it will not matter in the long run. As long as you and your bestie are married at the end of the day, that’s what matters.
Many thanks to Stephanie, Niran, and Alexandre Julien for sharing this beautiful album with us!
