Three cheers for the cutest, raddest, destination wedding couple!
As December quickly approaches, we thought it would be the perfect time to share this elegant and sunny beach wedding from gorgeous Cancun. Catherine and Ryan’s proposal story was one of the most sentimental stories that we had ever heard of, and will definitely inspire you to think a little deeper about that special moment and what you would like to do for your significant other…trust us 😉

We both met on an online dating site. We both hit it off very well from the beginning that we just kept seeing each other. One day became a week, a week turned into two…three…and then eventually we were inseparable and he ended up becoming my best friend and partner. About six months into our relationship, we knew that thing were getting very serious, and so we had decided to move in together. Since we both loved dogs, we decided to get an 8 week old puppy, who turned 4 years old on April 12, 2018.
There were some tough moments but this whole experience only made us become a stronger couple. We learnt how to communicate, comprise and work well with each other. Two years later was when he proposed. At this point in our relationship we had already discussed future plans, and a family together one day so we knew we were going in the right direction. But, I had thought I was still going to be waiting another year or two for a proposal, so was certainly caught off guard that he did it a lot sooner than expected.
It was our two year anniversary celebrating up in the CN tower in Toronto overlooking the whole city skyline. After our lovely dinner we walked around the observation deck, and that’s when he got down on one knee and proposed. I thought it was a big joke and didn’t think he was serious, with all the emotions hitting me, I ended up laughing hysterically which I think was my version of crying haha. But I did say yes! What was also very sentimental about this experience was that he had proposed to me with his grandmothers wedding band (on his mother’s side) whom was no longer with us.
The day he told his mom that he wanted to propose, she wanted him to pass this on to me which really means a lot. This ring is 52 years old! This was my wedding band, as I had an engagement ring customed to his grandmothers ring. Another thing we called fate, was when it came down to deciding on our wedding date. We knew we wanted a two year engagement and wanted it in January 2018, but at the end of the month. Without evening knowing this ahead of time, we had chosen January 26, 2018, which turned out to be his grandparents wedding date! His mother totally freaked out because she had never mentioned this to us about their wedding date! At this point, we definitely believed that his grandmother’s spirit was with us the moment he gave me her ring. And with her approval we magically picked their wedding date!
THE INSPIRATION (THEME/ STYLE/RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS)
My theme was soft and romantic. Our colours were soft pink/blush, ivory, light blue and navy blue. We also had a pop of Royal blue in my husband’s suit to stand out.
Our ceremony location already had such beautiful architectural design like their gazebo, with it being on their rooftop (the sky terrace), that I did not want to over do the decor and take away from the stunning views. Though I still wanted that romantic touch, and thus added white drapes, a white aisle runner, rose petals on each side of the aisle runner, a touch of pink ribbons on chairs, and four big posts of flowers. I felt like that was just the right amount, with our backdrop as the ocean.
I chose not to go in the DIY direction, since this was a destination wedding and we were travelling for it. I found it hard to pack things without overpacking and definitely worried about items being crushed in our luggage, so we decided to hire professionals instead. As for the reception, the original plan was to have it outside in the same location as the ceremony on the sky terrace but due to potential chance of rain in the evening, we did not want to take the chance and thus the resort had given us a stunning back up location in one of the ballrooms which had beautiful designs.
My biggest and favourite decor element, was our large marquee lights which said LOVE. I felt like this was such a great romantic touch and that extra bit of lighting for our dance floor also a great addition to our photos! We also were able to reuse the four large post of flowers to set up two by the love sign and two by our head table, with beautiful flower centrepieces, rose petals everywhere on our tables, and the cake table. Also to give that extra romantic touch we had votive candles on all the tables and some paper lanterns for extra lighting.
Our flowers were mainly roses, as they are my favourite! We also had Calla Lilies, hydrangeas and rose petals. We had roses and calla Lillie’s for all the bouquets and grooms boutonnière, and the groomsmen boutonnieres were just roses. For our large flower post and centrepieces, we had roses and hydrangeas and lots of rose petals everywhere around the centrepieces, while our cake table had roses and rose petals only. I feel like all these flowers added that romantic touch and with it being in blush and ivory, that gave it the soft look that I was looking for.
FAVOURITE PARTS OF THE WEDDING
One of our guests surprised us with an awesome game during the reception for guest entertainment. He brought 3 bottles of vodka grey goose to play spin the bottle! If it landed on you, you had to take a chug from the bottle! It was a great way to get everyone involved and also to get everyone drunk haha! Everyone loved it and we had such great shots of this! It was all such a great laugh in the end. Everyone loosened up and really enjoyed themselves.
Our wedding favors played a great part during the reception as they were sunglasses so it was nice to have everyone wearing them at one point just for fun and it was nice to see in our photos. But the spin the bottle game turned out to be one of our favourites from our wedding day.
Honestly the whole day was our favourite. From getting ready to the ceremony, taking pictures, portraits and the reception, the day was a dream come true, and I wouldn’t have done it any other way! I wish I could relieve the whole thing again!
Lace! I love lace and lace just adds a whole different level of romance! My dress was designed by Sophia Tolli. It was absolutely stunning, with lots of lace and detail of beading and bling! Just to give that whole extra sparkle. I fell in love with my dress the moment I tried it on. I loved that it was so different to any ordinary dress as it gave me two bridal looks in one dress! So I had a little bit more of that princess dramatic look for my ceremony and than a more simple and comfortable fitting look for my reception.
The dress was a strapless sweetheart fit and flare corset back, which came with a detachable overskirt that was open in the front to show off the main dress and the back of the over skirt was a massive amount of tulle and lace appliqués all over it. Another favourite piece to my outfit were my shoes! As a child I had always dream of having a pair of Christian Louboutin red bottoms, so I figured what better way to have them than for my wedding! It was so sparkly, and very tall 5 inches heels, as my husband is 6 foot 2″, so I had to be somewhat taller since I’m only 5 feet tall.
As for my bridesmaids, that wore all lace mermaid style dresses with high tops and open backs, in a light blue grey tone. I felt like this also added a romantic touch to the theme and also matched my wedding dress. It was a dress that was so flattering on all my girls as they all had such different body types and heights. For my husband, I wanted his look to be bolder and stand out from the rest plus with his suit being a royal blue suit, the colour just popped out in everything! It was perfect, and didn’t ruin the theme that I had going on.
I wanted him to stand out from his groomsmen so we had him in a full suit with jacket and his tie in a blush color to match my bouquet. As for the groomsmen I wanted to simplify their outfit more by having them in just a white dress shirt with suspenders, and navy dress pants and bow ties that matched the girls dresses. I also felt it was more appropriate for a beach theme wedding too. My very cute nephew also matched the groomsmen outfits as my ring bearer.
MOST ANTICIPATED MOMENT
The most anticipated moment of our wedding day was getting into my wedding dress, my shoes, getting all dolled up, seeing my girls all dolled up, walking down that aisle and seeing my husband ready in his suit and seeing all the guys done up as well! Also just being with everyone that meant so much to us, our immediate family and closest friends to celebrate such an amazing day. What was so special to us was just seeing everyone enjoying their time with us!
Do you have any wedding planning or marriage advice that you'd like to share with other couples planning their day?
My advice…take your time! Don’t rush, we had a 2 year engagement and I felt with this amount of time we were able to take our time with the planning and did not have to settle for less. We were able to chose the perfect resort/venue we wanted, we were able to find the best photographer for our day, have all the decor we wanted.
Sometimes when you rush, you have no choice but to do certain things because of how quick things get booked out for wedding and events. Especially nowadays, things get booked out a year in advance! Also it gave us plenty of time to save and not stress about silly things. Marriage advice, communication and comprising is the key! Also supporting each other in life goals, etc. These things will only make your relationship go a lot smoother. You really can’t change a person for who they are, but you can comprise and support each other.
Thank you so much to Catherine, Ryan and Quetzal Wedding Photo for sharing this cute album with us!
