Reading how couples met definitely tops the list of favourites when it comes to our job here at Adriana Weddings. The love stories are always filled with so much humour, love and pure fun to be honest. We’re always having a good time in the office reading these sweet stories, and its always such a joy sharing them with you all. We love how today’s featured couple, Janan and Shane met in college, but had only started dating years later when they both moved back to Austin. We also love that the proposal was done on a Big Sur road trip for Shane’s birthday weekend, but really ended up being a special trip for Janan, one that she says, “Is still one of my favourite memories!”. Bliss.

Big thank you to Gianna Keiko Photography for capturing this gorgeous destination wedding and for sharing it with us!

FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER:

Traveling from Austin, TX to Todos Santos, Baja with 30 of their closest friends, Janan + Shane’s wedding was a study on intentionality from start to finish. From partnering with local seafishermen to musicians and arranging group surfing lessons, their time together was about good people and good experience (and of course, great food).

S’mores bonfires, ATV entrances, and donkey getting ready details are just a few of the notable moments from the weekend in paradise.

FROM THE BRIDE:

HOW THEY MET

We met in high school. In classic Texas fashion, football is everything. We had a group of senior girls who would decorate varsity football players rooms before football games, bake them treats, make them signs, and dress the guys up for pep rallies. The group of girls was anonymous throughout the football season and we were revealed to our football player the last home game of the season. I was in the group of girls who had Shane as their varsity football player. Although I’m a year older, we had mutual friends and would see each other around high school, but we never dated and we both ended up at different colleges (UGA & A&M). Fast forward to a few years out of college. We had both lived in other cities and moved back to Austin around the same time. He reached out to me via Facebook to “catch up with his senior girl” and the rest is history.

THE PROPOSAL

In what Shane calls “the ultimate smokescreen”, he proposed to me on his birthday. We had planned a Big Sur road trip for his birthday weekend, ending in Santa Barbara to visit his Grandma. Along the road trip, we stopped on a remote beach in San Simeon where he popped the question. Of course I said yes (I think I asked him if he was serious first)! He pulled off the surprise and even coordinated with our family members to join us in Santa Barbara to celebrate that weekend. It is still one of my favourite memories!

THE INSPIRATION

Todos Santos (aka Magic Town) is one of the most beautiful places in the world. When you have the ocean for your backdrop, it’s hard not to be inspired. Hotel San Cristobal was the perfect venue with its vibrant colors and modern design that doesn’t take away from the beautiful scenery. We wanted our wedding to be about spending quality time with people we love and it was the perfect weekend of celebration. Our ceremony was non-religious and laid back. It was simple, sweet, and incorporated many things we love–adventure, music, and the people who have supported us along the way.

THE WEDDING DECOR

Hotel San Cristobal is an incredible venue and it doesn’t need much in terms of decor. I am not much of a visionary – the Wanderlust Weddings Baja team and the Hotel San Cristobal team were instrumental in creating the incredible design on our wedding day. HSC was very accommodating and we used many of the furniture and fixtures that were on site. Wanderlust Weddings Baja worked with Cabo Flowers and Cakes who brought in beautiful florals, succulents, painted chargers, succulents, terra cotta pots, vases, runners, and driftwood to complete the table decor and create an arch and canopy for our ceremony. It was more beautiful than I could ever dream up!

THE FLORALS

The Wanderlust Weddings Baja team put together a customized floral package that was within my budget. The florals incorporated a bridal bouquet (white and peach roses, coral mums, white lisianthus, and succulents), boutonnier (mini roses, succulent), the ceremony canopy (roses, lisianthus, mums, etc), and the table decor (driftwood with succulents and moss, white and coral roses and mums). The florals blew me away and really highlighted the beauty of Hotel San Cristobal and the beach setting.

PERSONALIZATIONS FOR THEIR SPECIAL DAY

For the rehearsal dinner, we wanted a local restaurant with great food that was authentic and representative of the beautiful town and people of Todos Santos. Wanderlust Weddings Baja helped us find Cristina and her restaurant La Palapa del Sabor. Cristina was an amazing hostess and our guests couldn’t stop talking about how great the food was. -As an animal lover, we worked with a local donkey named Einstein who makes appearances at events. Einstein was a huge hit at the wedding and pre-ceremony. Our guests loved him and he was fully decked out in florals. -Music is a big part of our lives and something that Shane and I wanted to prioritize on the big day. We featured local Todos Santos bands for both the rehearsal dinner and ceremony, as well as a DJ for the reception. All of the musicians were incredibly talented and great to work with. The Pepe Sosa Trio even learned songs that were special to us for the ceremony and it was one of my favorite memories from the whole day. -I am not much of a visionary when it comes to decor, but I somehow had this crazy bride idea that we should incorporate an ATV on the beach as our ceremony exit. Black Sheep Motorsports provided the coolest ATV I have ever seen. It made for a hilarious wedding exit that I’ll remember forever. -I am extremely grateful for our talented photographer Gianna. She really captured the beautiful details of the town, the ceremony, and the overall feel of the weekend. She has a genuine spirit that made coordinated photos feel effortless. With a small destination wedding, we knew the photographer would be an instrumental piece in capturing the weekend for our loved ones who couldn’t attend. Thanks to her amazing photos we get to relive the weekend all over again!

THE FASHION

We both sought out outfits that we would be comfortable and (of course) easy to dance in. Shane wore a navy linen suit and navy / brown silk tie from Suit Supply. I found my dress at a boutique in Austin called Unbridaled. The dress was designed by Rish Bridal (Victoria Gown). It was super comfortable, light, and I loved the detail on the train and light beading. It was the perfect dress for a beach wedding.

THE MOST SPECIAL MOMENT

The most special moment of our wedding day was after we were announced as husband and wife at the ceremony. I remember holding Shane’s hand, looking at each other, smiling, and looking out at so many people we love all in the same place. There’s really no other feeling like it.

ANY WEDDING PLANNING ADVICE FOR NEWLY-ENGAGED COUPLES?

Enjoy every moment! 🙂 Your wedding day is one of the only times in your life where so many people you care about are in one place. Always remember the love that you feel on that day and the love you have for one another–it will carry you through anything.
