He says that it was love at first sight for him, well at least after the first date he knew that it was meant to be. For me I knew something was different about him (something really special) but it took me a little while to open up and to allow myself to feel the feelings.
We met in Florida. I was in grad school in Miami and he was living and working in Boca Raton. We met at a Barnes and Noble. David is an avid reader, he was looking for a new book and I was with a friend looking for a recipe book for her mother. He approached me and tried to convince me to read a sci-fi book that I was not interested in, and after speaking for a little while he asked for my phone number. We ended up going on a date a couple days later. We have been together for almost 4 years now.
David got back from visiting his family in the US on May 15th. My birthday is May 16th so he planned for us to go to dinner. A few friends asked if I thought he would pop the question that night but I denied it, not believing that it would happen then. Looking back I should’ve caught on to the clues throughout the day. We went for dinner and everything seemed normal. I kept asking him what was going on because people were asking me lots of questions and giving me advice on how to dress for the night and how to do my hair and makeup.
He did not propose until we got back to my parents house that is on a hill with a beautiful view. On the balcony there was a table with a bouquet of flowers, a champagne bottle and 2 glasses. I knew what was happening when I saw that the lights were all off, there were fairy lights lining the balcony and A LOT of rose petals on the ground. As we walked out to the balcony I heard “our” song playing and David got down on one knee with a ring box in his hand and spoke for what seemed like a longggg time before popping the question haha. It really suited us and I could not have asked for a better night and proposal. David can be very romantic.
The wedding planning journey has been lots and lots of fun. There are so many places, people, styles and things to choose from it can make it difficult to choose just one. I am learning as I go and cannot complain. I love being heavily involved in the wedding planning process. David has been a huge help too and it helps that we have a similar sense of style and vision for what we want our wedding to be like.
It is difficult to choose just one. Luckily I got the opportunity to go wedding dress shopping in both New York and Miami and to see what each place had to offer. Wedding dress shopping was an amazing experience, it brought all my planning together and when I picked the dress it helped me to follow through with the style and look that I am going for for my wedding. Also our engagement photo shoot really helped us to get accustomed to being in front of the camera and David and I both commented about how it made us really excited for the wedding and made it feel like it was really happening! It helps that Jane made us feel so comfortable. The challenging part has been choosing specific things for the wedding, there are so many amazing options it makes it harder to choose just one.
My engagement ring perfectly suits mine and David’s relationship and style. My ring is white gold with a diamond solitaire. It is exactly what I wanted! The best part is that David picked the diamond out and got it made and the style is exactly what I had envisioned. It is very traditional much like how we have been in our relationship and the look we are going for in our wedding.
The wedding will be at Assumption Church and then the reception is at the Hilton in Trinidad. We decided that we wanted to get married in Trinidad as we both moved here at the end of 2016. David wanted his family and friends to visit to see where he now lives as they have never been and I always wanted to get married at home in Trinidad so it worked out for both of us. There was no arguing about if to get married in the US or in Trinidad haha.
I don’t want to give away too many details before the big day! When I tried on my dress I instantly knew it was the one, it just was a feeling I cannot describe but I’m sure all brides can understand with their own dresses. My shoes are beautiful! They are Jimmy Choo, they are classic but not common.
My bridesmaid dresses are elegant and formal but simple as many people have described my style for the wedding as “clean and modern but traditional.” David and I are going to Florida soon and we will be getting his suit then, that has not been bought as yet.
Any advice that I can give is to follow the style and look that you are going for regardless of if others don’t like it, it is about you and your husband or wife to be and not about others. Enjoy the wedding planning process but also remember that the marriage is more important than the wedding day. Have fun with it all and don’t wait until last minute to get things done as the day creeps up on you!
Thank you so much to the sweet couple and to Jane Decle Photography for sharing this gorgeous album with us!
