Hey there lovebirds! So this week we have a fun little treat for you, and we know you’re going to love it girls 😉
Now if any of you are from the sweet island of Trinidad and Tobago, and love Carnival, partying, and even fashion, then you would have definitely heard of the Hakwai Clan brand. But what you may not have known is that the force behind this outstanding brand is actually one of the best Personal Trainers in Trinidad & Tobago, and a dear friend of ours – Mr. Jeremy Tai Chew.
A few months ago, we got the opportunity to interview this Caribbean influencer to learn a little bit more about him, and to gain his expert advice on how our lovely brides to be could get into tip top shape for their wedding day!
Check out our interview below:
Tell us your story – How long have you been doing personal training, and what inspired you to get started?
I’ve been into sports and being active my entire life. I actually began dabbling with training friends for some time, and then realised that I truly enjoyed it. A friend of mine coaxed me into moving to Port of Spain from South Trinidad to really begin training and showcasing my expertise in the field, and I’ve been loving it ever since. Professionally I’ve been doing this seven years now.
What do you love most about doing exercise & personal training?
I love the fact that I can take someone who has no belief, no motivation, little strength physically or mentally in themselves, but has a desire to change and reach deep down inside them and pull it out. It really does feel good changing and influencing people’s lives and their outlook on what they can do, which is anything they put their mind to.
What sets you apart from other personal trainers?
All personal trainers are different, just like a trainer’s personality is different so is their training. My training is based on movement and exercise that I’ve taken from many different methods, but more so toward training the individual for life rather than just aesthetics. (No training is bad or good, training simply has to mesh with an individual’s personality).
How would you describe your daily workout routine?
It depends on what I’m working on that day but usually I train very early in the morning. I find my body responds best then. Typically my routines consist of a weighted, calisthenic and an endurance movement. My workouts usually last around two hours and I train six days a week, sometimes twice a day on some days and HIIT (high intensity interval training) at least once a week.
Are there any specific food and nutrition that you recommend a bride to include in her diet during training?
I encourage everyone to eat whole foods (basically buying your ingredients raw and cooking). I also recommend that eating at a specific time daily. I for example, eat at 6 am, 10 am, take a shake at 12pm, and then have two more meals at 3pm and 6pm, and even sometimes in between.
How do you stay motivated and what’s your favorite quote?
My motivation lies in the fact that my peers and clients look up to me. They expect me to lead by example, and so I try not to let them down.
The words I live by are:
“Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard”.
How long in advance should a bride contact you for your services before their big day?
The earlier the better! Most brides in my experience begin to stress (which makes you put on more weight in some cases) if they aren’t getting the results as fast as they should. I always recommend a minimum of three months prior to the wedding day, and even earlier depending on the kind of work that we have to do, especially after we do a consultation on the type of dress that they may be interested in wearing.
Do you have any tips for brides to be struggling with their health & ideal size?
It is never too late to start, and we all have the internet so I would always advise to do your own research and get excited about getting fit and in shape. Invest in yourself and your health! Eating clean is not as expensive as many believe. It is however more time consuming but in the end, well worth it.
Do you have packages for brides? What are your Package Details?
I do have specific bridal fitness packages, but it would of course vary in price depending on the potential size of the group interested, and my schedule.
What’s next for Mr. Tai Chew?
Look out for a lot of big things! I am very proud and excited about my brand – Hakwai Clan, which is a lifestyle company involved in clothing and accessories, carnival, culinary…..anything that affects your life. So, you can look out for more via our Facebook page.
In closing, I urge everyone to get up and get active, and remember that procrastination is just another excuse for you not working toward your dreams!
